WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Working as a GP in New Zealand

To work as a GP in New Zealand, you must hold registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and secure a verified job offer. You must also complete primary source verification of your medical credentials via EPIC, and successfully undergo assessment by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.

Practicing as an independent specialist requires several essential steps and criteria, which vary depending on where you trained:

  • International Medical Graduates (IMGs): Doctors from comparable health systems (such as the UK, Australia, Canada, or the US) can apply for the Comparable Health System pathway. Those from other jurisdictions must apply via the Vocational (Voc3) pathway. This route requires a recognized GP/family medicine qualification, at least two years of consultant-level experience, and a personal interview.
  • Supervised Period: Regardless of your background, you will likely start in a 'provisional vocational' scope of practice. You will be required to work under supervision for approximately 12–18 months while your practice and clinical standards are assessed against the New Zealand system.
  • New Zealand Trained Doctors: Local graduates must complete a two-year prevocational hospital training program, followed by three years of specialist clinical training (GPEP) and examinations to achieve Fellowship.
  • Immigration: General Practitioners are recognized on the New Zealand Green List, offering a "Straight to Residence" visa option once a qualified job offer is in hand.
